110 Year Old Waterfront Estate at Harbour Island in the Bahamas

Reached by boat along a private dock, or by golf cart down a half-mile sandy lane flanked by coconut palms, Beacon Hill Estate occupies one of the most coveted positions on Harbour Island — a two-and-a-half-acre waterfront property set within the celebrated Narrows, with westward views across the bay that draw out some of the Bahamas' most unhurried sunsets. Following a meticulous three-year, ground-up renovation completed in 2023, owner and architect Lawrence Dawson restored the estate's colonial bones while opening it entirely to the tropical landscape beyond. As Dawson noted of the project, his aim was "to seamlessly blend modern amenities with Bahamian charm" — drawing initial inspiration from Harbour Island's own Pink Sands Hotel, with its signature languor and salt-bleached elegance.

The Raj Company furnished the estate throughout, producing a collection of coastal and colonial-style pieces developed in close collaboration with Dawson's vision: four-poster beds whose proportions suit the generous, breeze-filled bedrooms, hall tables, coffee tables, sofas, and upholstered chairs — several carrying playful carved motifs that pay quiet tribute to the island's own ornamental traditions. The pineapple, long the emblematic symbol of Bahamian hospitality, is among the motifs woven into the furniture's detailing, etched into tables and chairs with the kind of handcraft that lifts a decorative gesture into something genuinely considered. Taken together, the collection reads as furniture at ease with its setting — at once refined and entirely at home in the tropics.
