A California Home with Indian Soul at Saratoga, CA Residence by Richa Bahl

In the oak-studded hillsides of Saratoga, forty minutes south of San Francisco, a 4,000-square-foot residence presents a quintessentially Californian frame within which Mumbai-based designer  Richa Bahl was asked to layer something altogether more personal. Bahl's brief was to honour the owners' Indian roots and global sensibilities without displacing the architecture's inherent warmth: the result, as featured in Architectural Digest India, is a home where, as the studio describes it, "design meets memory, where tradition embraces modernity" — Indian cultural identity expressed through a refined, contemporary lens rather than literal reference.

The Raj Company contributed a carefully considered suite of bespoke furniture developed in close collaboration with Bahl: hand-inlaid tables whose surface detailing rewards close attention, barstools, decorative mirrors, and a series of corner chairs. The collection's most singular piece is a painted tiger chair — vivid, assured, and entirely in keeping with Bahl's commitment to bold choices held within elegant proportion. Sunburst cabinets complete the commission, their radiating form speaking a language of Indian decorative tradition made entirely fresh. Each piece was made by hand, the inlay and painted work executed with the patience that distinguishes craft from production.
