Housed within the Romanesque Revival architecture of The Archive Building at 160 Christopher Street in New York's West Village, Sabyasachi Mukherjee's first international flagship marked a landmark moment — the arrival of Indian maximalism, on its own terms, at the centre of the global luxury conversation. Grand, stained oak archways lead into a meandering, labyrinthine space that blends cultural savoir-faire with Indian decadence, drawing from old-world Calcutta mansions and incorporating antique Dutch pottery. "I wanted to present a distinct Indian voice," Mukherjee said of the store — and the 5,800-square-foot interior does precisely that, at every scale and in every detail.

The Raj Company contributed a substantial suite of handmade furniture developed in direct collaboration with Mukherjee: cabinets, display cases, chairs, tête-à-têtes, chests, and tables — pieces whose materiality and craftsmanship were held to the same standard as the antique and artisanal objects surrounding them. Named among Veranda's 24 Most Beautiful Shops in the World for 2023, the New York flagship stands as one of the most considered retail interiors of recent years — and a project in which the furniture was made to belong to that company.
